Surgery & Anaesthetics

All our patients are given a full clinical examination before they are receive any form of anaesthetic and before they undergo a surgical procedure.

We recognise, as do you, that surgery and anaesthesia are not without risks but we constantly strive to keep these risks to a minimum. We offer older or high risk patients a pre– anaesthetic blood test to identify potential liver or kidney disease, enabling us to chose the most appropriate and safest anaesthetic.

Surgical care

If your pet needs surgery you can relax in knowing that we can deal with anything which may come up. Routine neutering operations are carried out daily. Other operations such as a labrador eating a sock causing gut obstruction and requiring gut surgery, removal of a growth, fracture repair, joint surgery, eye and ear surgery, and specialist surgery such as spinal surgery , total hip replacement , cataract surgery and thoracic surgery are also all carried out at the surgery.

rcvs practice standards

We are able to provide small animal anaesthesia by an oxygen/ isoflurane gaseous mixture which is currently recognised as the safest anaesthetic method available to Veterinary Practice.

All small animal patients are constantly monitored during surgery and anaesthesia.

Greenmount has a strict attention to surgical sterility and cleanliness with 2 sterile operating theatres, ultrasonic instrument cleaner, hospital instrument washer, 2 vacuum autoclave sterilisers. In the large treatment/ preparation room our patients are anaesthetised, clipped and prepared for sterile orthopaedic surgery before being wheeled into the theatres for final sterile preparation for surgery. Fortunately this means we have a low surgical infection rate and complication rate. This is especially critical for surgical orthopaedic cases.

The provision of our veterinary surgery has been inspected and approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as part of our voluntary joining of the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme- one of the few vet practices in Co Armagh to have been RCVS accredited.

Care of our surgical patients doesn’t just end at the operating theatre- they are monitored and cared for in the separate dog and cat wards by our dedicated nursing team with provision of effective analgesia and pain control, ensuring that their stay with us is as comfortable and safe as possible.
